In addition to Karen Rogers‘ planned swim from the Farallon Islands to Aquatic Park in San Francisco Bay in June and Anne Cleveland‘s attempt to become the first person to do a double-crossing of both the English Channel and Catalina Channel in August, Penny Palfrey will be the first major swim of the year.

Penny will attempt a nearly-unthinkable solo swim: 72 miles up and over huge ocean swells from the island of Oahu to the island of Kauai, across the wind-whipped, shark-infested, Portuguese Man O War-filled Kaieiewaho Channel, sometime after April 19th. Her window of opportunity will remain until May 5th.

According to our research, only Jonathan Ezer has previously attempted the swim before being pulled out of the water after 12 hours of fighting the elements.
