Jack LaLanne, a renowned and early fitness icon in the United States, died this week at the age of 96.

He had a popular television show and was always doing exhibitions in the open water to colorfully demonstrate his fitness and how important fitness is for everyone.

In 1954 at the age of 40, he swam 1.7 miles along the entire length of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, underwater.

In 1955, he swam from Alcatraz Island to Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco while handcuffed (photo above).
