Ben Hair was a lifelong swimmer and charismatic lifeguard who did his job professionally.
Unfortunately, he died tragically in a traffic accident in 2009. But his memory lives on via the Ben Hair Memorial Open Water Swim in Lake Anna, Virginia.
Reflecting the multi-talented kid Hair was, the Ben Hair Memorial Open Water Swim is also a multi-layered competition. “The many children he kept safe at the pool, his friends, teammates, and his loving family miss him greatly,” explains race director Robert Burgholzer.
Hair is remembered with a 5 km race, a 1 km team pursuit event, and a cumulative stage race. Swimmers are ranked on the basis of their finish of the 5 km race as well as their time on the 1 km team pursuit event.
