58-year-old Theodore Yach started his journey between Robben Island and Cape Town in November 1981.

More than 34 years later, he attempted and completed a pioneering Century Swim (100th crossing) in 3 hours 10 minutes in 13-14ºC (53-55ºF) waters from Robben Island.

His joy is captured on the Open Water Swimming Magazine cover for next month.
