Ranomi Kromowidjojo/Ferry Weertman (Wedding Bells Will Ring)

Aside from chasing trips to the medals podium at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, the Netherlands’ Ranomi Kromowidjojo and Ferry Weertman will have a wedding to look forward to planning. The longtime couple announced their engagement on Instagram on Sunday, with a picture of a smiling Kromowidjojo revealing a new piece of jewelry.

Kromowidjojo and Weertman form a couple from opposite ends of the distance spectrum, Kromowidjojo the double-sprint freestyle champion from the 2012 Olympic Games in London and Weertman the gold medalist in the 10k open-water event at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. Both are targeting the Tokyo Games next summer, with Kromowidjojo coming off a superb showing for Team Iron in the inaugural season of the International Swimming League.

Although Team Iron did not advance to the ISL grand final in Las Vegas, Kromowidjojo was one of the most reliable performers for her team, especially in the all-important Skins events. Kromowidjojo won multiple Skins competitions during the season, in the process demonstrating her ability to rise up in the pressure-filled event. If nothing else, those efforts should have provided Kromowidjojo with confidence and momentum entering the Olympic campaign, where she will be among the medal favorites in the 50 free and 100 free.

In addition to sweeping the sprint events in London, Kromowidjojo advanced to the finals of the 50 free and 100 free at the Rio Games. It was later revealed that the Dutch superstar was forced to race at those Games with a serious back injury that significantly hindered her performances.

Weertman has been one of his sport’s most-consistent performers in the open-water ranks for several years, complementing his Olympic title with three medals from the World Championships. The highlight was a gold medal in the 10k discipline at the 2017 World Champs in Budapest.
