Swimming Solo Across The Sea Of Cortez

Spread the love

Another major warm-water ultra-marathon swim will be attempted in June. The stretch between Baja California and the mainland of Mexico has never been successfully crossed before – not by a relay or a solo swimmer.

While Chloe McCardel will be attempting to swim 103 miles (165 km) from Cuba to Florida on one side of Mexico, Paul Lundgren will attempt to swim 78 miles (125 km) across the Sea of Cortez on the other side of Mexico.

They both will swim without any protective swimwear and will both face the viciously savage stinging creatures of the deep.

While McCardel will be swimming across the Gulf Stream, one of the greatest flows of water on the planet, Lundgren will be swimming across the most biologically diverse waters of the world. Besides the inevitable stings, he will be undoubtedly see all kinds of marine life…looking up at him wondering what kind of human has joined us in this sea?

A courageous one for sure.

Additional photos of Lundgren’s previous attempt in 2012 by Scott Rokis are posted here. For more information on his swim, visit here.
