On August 5th, Ed, Frank and Paul Reynolds joined with their cousin Jacob Banit and two in-laws, Teresa Frias (wife of Mike) and Joe Schertler (husband of Laura) completed a relay across the Catalina Channel to raise awareness of Lewy Body Dementia (LBD). People who have suffered from LBD included actor Robin Williams, entrepreneur Ted Turner, and professional baseball player Bill Buckner. The progressive disease has similar symptoms of both Alzheimer and Parkinson’s disease, causing many LBD patients to frequently be misdiagnosed.
15-year-old Banit and Frank Reynolds III organized the swim in memory of their grandfather Frank Sr. Frank Sr. successfully swam across Catalina Channel after he had a 19-hour DNF the year before. Ed recalls his father, “He loved the water. He swam all his life until LBD robbed his vitality. Some of his swims included around Manhattan Island, the Dardanelles, the Straits of Juan de Fuca, a record as the oldest man to cross the Catalina Channel and multiple attempts to cross the English Channel. Even with Lewy Body dementia, he swam every day in his local pool, taking 30 minutes to swim 50 yards. He passed away from Lewy Body disease in 2014.”
The team completed the swim in 13 hours 6 minutes, finishing at 11 am on August 6th.
