Martin Strel‘s Liberty to Freedom Swim in New York Harbor on September 5th was in commemoration of the 10-year anniversary of his 2,360-mile swim down the length of the Mississippi River, which he dedicated to the victims and heroes of 9/11.

Strel is a colorful character who can describe his swims in numerous languages.

Strel will be one of the speakers at the 2012 Global Open Water Swimming Conference on the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California. His talks always are filled with interesting experiences that he has faced during his swims. He can explain how he attacked by piranhas in the Amazon, how we faced rapids in the Yangtze River in China, how he dealt with alligators that surprised him on his big river swims, and how he raises sponsorship of his daring swimming expeditions.
