There are all kinds of open water swimming courses:

The classic course is a point-to-point (or linear) course or a bank-to-bank course, but there are also interesting geometric courses (triangular or rectangular or loop), ship-to-shore courses, out-and-back courses, island-to-island swims, coastal swims, transoceanic swims, and circumnavigations.

Although transoceanic swims are very rare, perimeter swims are also not common.

The Neda el Món Prades Siurana Swim is a perimeter swim (3 km, 6 km and 9 km) held on May 1st in Lake Siurana, Spain with both competitive and non-competitive categories.
