If you are set about swimming across an entire country, how long would that take?
In the case of Nejib Belhedi of Tunisia who is swimming 1,400K from the west to east of Tunisia, he started on June 22nd from Djerba Island and has swum over 700K to date as December ends.
He is scheduled to finish in June 2012 for a 365-day journey, averaging 3.8K per day.
The children who are joining in with Nejib along different points in his year-long stage swim will continue swimming through September 2012 in the spirit of Ouma. Throughout 2012, Nejib will be joined by not only local Tunisian swimmers of all ages and swimmers throughout the Middle East, but also established open water swimmers like Nuala Moore and Anne Marie Ward of Ireland.
In January, Nejib will take a side trip to Libya where plans are being formulated for a similar stage swim across neighboring Libya, a daunting 2,000K aquatic traverse along the coastline of Africa’s fourth largest country.
What Nejib started, others will continue across the Middle East.
