John Laurens took an aerial photo of the English Channel that he sent to his schoolmate David Minty who crossed the English Channel twice, once as a 14-year-old in 1977 (11:36) and a second time as a 16-year-old in a 1979 race with John Kinsella and other invited professionals (12:00).

Minty was also the third person to complete a circumnavigation around his native island of Jersey in 1977 in 10 hours 54 minutes.
