Matthew Mitchell, a former world-class swimmer and an experienced waterman from Long Beach, California, practices shooting the gap between two open water teammates in a practice in a pool. The UCLA graduate picks his moment after he double-sighting. Once committed, he picks up his stroke count and gets a boost from an increased kick. There is no hesitation when physical contact is made and he keeps his head down until he has successfully shot the gap.
