Shark Attack, Follow-up Questions

On December 21st, 55-year-old Erica Fox, co-founder of the Kelp Krawlers, was reportedly attacked by a great white shark at Lover’s Point on the southern edge of Monterey Bay, California, according to fellow Kelp Krawler Sara Rubin.

Six days later on December 27th, her body was found in the ocean south of Davenport Beach, California. Her father identified her remains which were recovered with the help of Cal Fire and local authorities while her husband, Jean-Francois Vanreusel, also a Kelp Krawler, confirmed details about her Garmin watch (presumably on her wrist) and a shark deterrent band on her ankle.

It was a very tragic end to a very beautiful life and accomplished, passionate human.

This has happened before in the open water swimming community. Swimmers have died due to various causes, including shark attacks. All are tragic. All endings are sad and unfortunate.

And there are many other cases in the global open water swimming community where there are near-death accidents. These are also sad and unfortunate.

But unlike the global climbing community, there is rarely a public description of the death or accident. I strongly believe it is as important for the global swimming community to understand an accurate fact-based description of what occurred that ultimately led to a death or near-death accident. It is certainly sad and traumatic for the individuals and families involved, but my interest in sharing information in order to prevent such tragedies from occurring again.

The global climbing community does it. As do other team and individual sports.

But the swimming community does not.

Worldwide climbing accident reports are what the climbing community learns from. The American Alpine Club describes its reports as such, “Reading about climbing accidents is NOT fun. However, it’s an important way to learn, and hopefully reduce risk and avoid future accidents. Starting in 1948, the American Alpine Club has published an annual summary of reported climbing related accidents in the US and Canada, titled ‘Accidents in North American Climbing.

The American Alpine Club also publishes a monthly accident report sampler, called ‘The Prescription‘ that is free, offers an archive of recent accident reports, and is a good representation of what is found in the complete publication.

But information about deaths and near-death accidents in the open water swimming world are most often left to people commenting on social media platforms and hearsay.

One day, I hope this changes. For the good of the sport, I believe providing and sharing comprehensive, solid, fact-based educational information on deaths and near-death accidents can only benefit the sport long-term.

But I also realize that my sole opinion is most probably in a very small minority among open water swimmers.

Shark Eyesight

For example, I often read that shark attacks on ocean-goers, especially those who wear wetsuits, are due to mistaken identity. That is, it is a common assumption that humans in wetsuits appear to be seals by the sharks.

But is this true?

Sharks predate trees and dinosaurs. Sharks are highly adapted species that have evolved over the last 400 million years, through all kinds of adaptations throughout history. They are efficient survivors that are hunt by using a combination of smell and electroreception. Making mistakes is probably the least of its habits. Sharks also supposedly have very good eyesight, especially in low light (note: Fox was attacked around noon on December 21st). Sharks also have incredible night vision, good contrast detection, and can see some colors.

So do sharks really mistake humans with wetsuits for seals?

Do sharks make such mistakes? When there are humans in wetsuits in the ocean and they are hungry, do shark ignore their overwhelmingly powerful senses of smell and electroreception and instead rely exclusively on their eyesight? I do not know, but it would be great to learn from a shark expert in a comprehensive, fact-based educational presentation on sharks. This knowledge would benefit the entire open water swimming, triathlon, and ocean-goer communities.
