Sergio Lopez Miro of Virginia Tech University and Tim Murphy of Penn State University will be inducted into the International Swim Coaches Association Hall of Fame in its Class of 2023.
A richly deserved honor, Lopez is a four-time Olympic coach, a two-time Olympian for Spain, and won the bronze medal in the 200m breaststroke in 1988. He is currently the Director of Virginia Tech Swimming & Diving and a KAATSU Aqua coach.
Virginia Tech finished 11th at the 2021 and 2022 NCAA Championships, the highest finishes in school history.
At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, he coached eight swimmers including one silver medalist.
He previously was the associate head coach at Auburn University, and the head high performance coach of the Singapore Swimming Association. As a high school coach, he coached Olympic gold medalists Ryan Murphy and Joseph Schooling at the Bolles School in Florida.
Tim Murphy has coached at Penn State and Harvard University where his teams captured six Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming League titles. He led the men’s team to seven undefeated dual meet seasons and coached Alex Meyer to a 10th place finish at the 2012 London Olympic Games in the 10 km marathon swim and a gold medal at the FINA World Open Water Swimming Championships 25 km event.
Murphy has placed athletes on Olympic, World University, Pan-Pacific and Pan-American teams.
