The last summer season of open water swimming in Southern California – in 2019 – saw Ryan Bullock as its dominant swimmer…by far.
From the 4.8 km Naples Island Swim around Naples Island in Long Beach and the 10 km WOWSA Ocean Fest between Redondo Beach and Palos Verdes Peninsula to the 3.2 km Newport Beach Pier-to-Pier Swim and the 1.6 km Swim The Avenues, the doctor of audiology originally from Arkansas won all the races in Southern California. Some races, he won with the final sprint; others, he just pulled away with superior stamina.
The 2021 Naples Island Swim will be held on August 15th – where Bullock is the defending champion. He and hundreds of others swimmers, from young to old, will gather on the shores of Long Beach after a two-year layoff due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event has been a local favorite since the 1950’s.
