Dr. Markus Rogan, PsyD, LMFT (43, Austria, IISA bio here, World Aquatics bio here, @markusrogan.official) lived up to the hype as a four-time Olympic swimmer. The 2004 Athens Olympics silver medalist won the 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, and 200m freestyle events at Vermont’s Lake Memphremagog in the annual Memphremagog Winter Swimming Festival on February 21st and 22nd in -0.83°C water.
Other multiple race winners include Juliet Kadlecek (56, USA, MSF bio here, IISA bio here) who won the 200m freestyle and the Hat Competition while Irena Requena (35, Mexico) won the 25m freestyle, 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 25m breaststroke, and 25m butterfly among the women.
The relative youth of the winners were balanced with their septuagenarian swimmers Derek Yack (70), Pam Ladds (76), and Martha LaRiviere (73), and octogenarian competitors, Michael Donaldson (86) and Ginny Peck (80). Race visionary Phil White said about Donaldson, “I could see in the twinkle of his eyes and the smile on his face that we both know that every day is a miracle and every day can be an opportunity for something new.”
White also recognizes volunteer who participate with special diligence and a genuine joy. “We call it the Bob Kraft Happy Hooker Award. A few years ago, we extended it to all volunteers, not just Hookers, but also Strippers, Escorts, Gunners, Skimmers and Huggers. This year the award went to Karina Palmorino along with a walking stick, hand carved by our community’s beloved, retired gynecologist, Bill Peck. Karina first volunteered for the Games as a long distance yacker at Kingdom Swim. She’s also a winter swimmer. She then volunteered as a Stripper. Recently she has also signed on as an escort pilot for In Search of Memphre, our swim the length of Lake Memphremagog between Vermont and Quebec. She is part of our family now and her broad smile is never far from the moment.”
