Makenna Sherman, Jackson Irwin Win 7.5 km USA Swimming Junior National Championship Titles

On the final day of the USA Swimming National Open Water Swimming Championships in Sarasota Florida, Makenna Sherman of the Sandpipers Of Nevada and Jackson Irwin of the Sarasota Tsunami Swim Team won the 7.5 km junior national races.

Sherman swam to a 9-second victory of Chloe Teger of Orange County Gold and Karrington Hansen of the Saint Petersburg Aquatics while Irvin won by an incredible 1 minute 45 seconds over James Darcy of Long Island Aquatic Club and Kannen Crossland of Premier Aquatics Club of Klein.

High school sophomore Sherman had earlier participated in the USA Swimming National Select Camp and trained in January at the high-altitude Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. She certainly made her preparations and focus worth her efforts.

Irwin had finished second in last year’s 7.5 km Junior National Championships by 5 seconds. This year, he was able to compete in the championships near home. With an additional year of training (where he dropped his 500-yard freestyle time to 4:29.59), he clearly showed the level of his improvement.
