Kūlia i ka nu‘u is a Hawaiian-language term that literally means “strive to reach the summit”.
It is a traditional Hawaiian value of accomplishment and achievement. According to Managing With Aloha, people with this value continually pursue improvement and personal excellence. For these individuals, the most satisfying competition is with themselves. They consider their life to be a work in progress and they enjoy the effort.
This value seems to be intrinsic in so many open water swimmers we have met on every continent and of every age, ability and background, from marathon swimmers and ice swimmers to casual ocean swimmers and professionals.
