Joshua Brown of the University of Michigan (@joshua_._brown, World Aquatics bio here) will have a big target on his swim cap on Saturday in Sarasota, Florida at the 2025 College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) National Collegiate 5K Open Water Swimming Championship in Sarasota, Florida. Brown who trained with the successful Sandpiper team in Las Vegas during his redshirt Olympic year will race on the 5 km flat-water course against 93 other collegiate swimmers who know Brown’s open water swimming pedigree and pool speed as the pre-race favorite.

Brown represented USA Swimming at the 2024 World Championships in Doha, competing in both the 5 km and 10 km races. He has also competed in World Cup competitions from Hong Kong to Portugal as well as the FINA World Junior Open Water Swimming Championships in Seychelles.

The Championships are unique in that athletes from all divisions (I, II, III, NAIA) compete together [see men’s psyche sheet below]. This enables Division III stars like  Thomas Langlois of Whittier College (@thomaslangloisopenwaterswimmer) who recently won the recent 2025 MPSF Open Water Swimming Championship in Southern California [see photo below] to travel cross country and take their best shot at standing on the podium against athletes from the more competitive divisions.

The 2025 CSCAA Open Water Championship will take place on December 13th at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota. USA Swimming has designated the event as an approved qualifying event for its national championship. The top five finishers for each gender earn invitations to the USA Swimming 5K Open Water Championships.
