Turbulent water, huge seas, scary sharks, venomous jellyfish, massive tidal flows, extreme temperatures, oncoming currents…many open water swimmers enjoy overcoming the challenges of the open water.

But the simple joy of a tranquil setting under pristine conditions is also a welcomed treat for many.

And so it was at the South Africa’s Eastern Province Open Water Swim Championships held at Marina Martinique where Olympian Jessica Roux won the 10 km event in 2 hours 13 minutes to defend her title. Everyone similarly enjoyed the flat-water venue.

The 5 km swim was won by Edward Johannissen from East London. Kendal Wright from St Francis Bay came second in his age group as did Brenton Williams, who completed the distance only swimming butterfly. Kevin Richards, who organizes the Marina Mile, finished second overall in the 5 km. Former South African national swim squad member Byron Lockett showed that he is firmly on the comeback trail by dominating the 3 km event in a time of 36 minutes. Lockett is pushing once again for a spot in the national open water squad. Jeffreys Bay swimmer Caro de Jager came second in the 3 km swim. Alan Searle won his age group in the 3 km event while veteran JBay swimmer JC Van Wyk came second in his age group, as did Humansdorp-based swimmer Francis Searle. Garth Wooding won his age group in the 1 k swim, with his son Dylan coming second in his age group. MC Strydom finished in second place in the bank-to-bank swim.

The second round of the Eastern Province Open Water Swim Championships takes place at Marina Martinique this Sunday.
