Ginevra Taddeucci Steps Up To Gold in the European Championships 5 km

Viktória Mihályvári Farkas (21, Hungary, World Aquatics bio here, @v_mihalyvari) won a surprising gold in the 10 km race on Day One of the European Aquatics Open Water Swimming Championships in Stari Grad, Croatia, beating favored Ginevra Taddeucci (27, Italy, World Aquatics bio here, @ginevrataddeucci).

But the Italian Olympic bronze medalist reversed the tables in today’s 5 km race to capture gold with 1.9-second victory over her Hungarian rival. Maria de Valdes Alvarez of Spain, who was disqualified in the 10 km race yesterday, came back strong today to finish third.

It was Taddeucci’s first individual victory during her professional career. Her joy was clearly evident. “I’m very happy, because I always struggle in the final part of the race since I’m not very fast, so I didn’t really expect it. I’m really happy. I didn’t think this gold would come, especially since yesterday.”
