I had the opportunity to attend a screening on the Disney studios and the red-carpet movie premiere in Hollywood of Young Woman and the Sea that will be released on May 31st.

The movie is about the life and English Channel crossing of Gertrude Ederle who won a gold medal at the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris and became the first woman to swim across the English Channel in 1926.

The movie is based on the book written by Glenn Stout: Young Woman & the Sea – How Trudy Ederle Conquered the English Channel and Inspired the World that was published in 2009.

A full review will be provided on May 31st, but if swimmers ever have an opportunity to attend a red-carpet premiere by a major movie studio…by all means, go.

Swimmers and athletes of significant note were in attendance including Olympic gold medalists and world record holders John Naber, Bruce Furniss, Janet Evans, Brian Goodell, Jeff Ferrell, John Moffett, Gary Hall Sr., Diana Nyad, John Kinsella, and others.

British actor Daisy Ridley portrayed Gertrude Ederle in a gold-medal performance. She was gracious, beaming, and humbly appreciative at the attention she received during premiere and its after party. She chatted and listened to those who approached her. Titans of Hollywood were mingling with the crowd including Jerry Bruckheimer.

The music was great. The food was delicious. The ambiance was outstanding. The conversations ranged from how did the Olympians and world champions train at their peak (Kinsella’s go-to main set: 10 x 1500 @ 20 minutes) to the surprise appearance of a very well-known marathon swimmer in the film.

Watch the great film – and find out who the new SAG member from the professional marathon swimming world is.

A full review of the movie will be posted on the Daily News of Open Water Swimming on May 31st.
