Emily Brunemann led a 1-2 American finish at the FINA 10K Marathon Swimming World Cup event (7th International Marathon Swimming Santos – Unisanta / Renata Agondi Trophy) in Aparecida this morning in Santos, Brazil.

Yale University freshman Eva Fabian was second and third went to Italian Rachele Bruni.

The organization of the event was remarkable in its numbers.

300 people provided a variety of services including water safety officers, firefighters, security boats, inflatable lifeboats, the Port Authority, kayaks, Lancha ICU, a helicopter, ambulances, speedboats and boats for the referees and coaches as well as Physiotherapy Unisanta, the Red Cross, SOS Foundling.

Some of the early observations based on the first leg’s results include:

1. The Americans are stacked with talent as are the Italians.
2. The Russians are still looking for an athlete with the talent of Larisa Ilchenko.
3. The British lack depth without Keri-Anne Payne.
4. The Brazilians continue to have a good 1-2 punch with Poliana Okimoto and Ana Marcela Cunha.
5. The Grand Dame of professional marathon swimming – Angela Maurer – continues to plug away year after year.
