The water was choppy and rough – and the 10 km times reflected the turgid waters off Fort Myers Beach in Florida today. David Heron, a 26-year-old postgraduate swimmer from Tennessee University, showed his prowess and experience in the open water by passing and then holding off his younger rival Brennan Gravley from the University of Florida on the last loop of the 10 km course at the 2021 USA Swimming Open Water Swimming National Championships.

Heron said later, “I’m happy to finally win my first 10K after so many years. It was a pretty smooth race— I felt pretty good. I never really felt like I was struggling and felt actually way stronger the last couple of laps there.”
