Colm Walsh Talks About His Fastnet Rock Crossing

Spread the love

Hemophilia is an inherited bleeding disorder in which the blood does not clot properly. This can lead to spontaneous bleeding as well as bleeding following injuries or surgery.

Colm Walsh, a member of the Irish Haemophilia Society member, completed a 18 km crossing from Baltimore to Fastnet Rock in Co. Cork, Ireland in 5 hours 53 minutes.

Fastnet Rock – meaning “sharp-tooth isle” or “solitary rock” – is a small island in the Atlantic Ocean and is the most southerly point of Ireland that lies off the Irish mainland.

Walsh described his experience swimming from Baltimore to Fastnet Rock in an IMSHOF YouTube interview with Ned Denison, the chairperson of the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame. Their discussions varied from

  • his perspectives swimming without sight of the mainland
  • the taste of his feeds, going both up and down
  • dealing with lion’s mane jellyfish
  • enjoying his mindset and ability to get the job done, even without use of his lower body
  • his escort boat crew and escort pilot
  • the reasons why he started swimming
  • how he got involved in the Sandycove Island swimming group
