In 1988, Roly Bisslik [shown below] became the first person to swim 30 km in over 10 hours from Venezuela to Aruba in a charity swim in order to raise funds to buy a piece of land to build an Olympic swimming pool for the community of Aruba, later named Piscina Olimpico Roly Bisslik.30 years later, Bisslik coached 5 swimmers to replicate his 1988 feat: Davy Bisslik, Romar Arendsz, Wendy Kock-Croes, Stephan Thijsen, and Deaxo Croes in 10 hours 20 minutes under the escort of pilot Johannes L.J. Versteeg with escort crew members Charlene Leslie, Seanbrick Topperberg, and Incoe Marsinus.
World Aquatics brought Aruba, a small beautiful island located in the southern Caribbean Sea off the coast of Venezuela, to the global open water swimming community’s attention once again. This week, World Aquatics produced a touching feature on Britta Schwengle (21, Aruba, World Aquatics bio here, @britta.schwengle.15) who competed in Singapore at the recent 2025 World Aquatics Championships [see video above].
The 21-year-old from Aruba placed 46th in the 10 km race at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships on Sentosa Island in Singapore in 2 hours 29 minutes – while making her father and coach extremely proud. Her other international results are listed below.
- September 2022: finished 23rd at the 2022 FINA World Junior Open Water Swimming Championships 10 km in Seychelles
- July 2023: finished 47th at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships 5 km in Fukuoka, Japan
- July 2023: finished 49th at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships 10 km in Fukuoka, Japan
- October 2023: finished 16th in the 10 km race at the Pan American Games in Chile
- February 2024: finished 54th at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships 10 km in Doha, Qatar
