Brennan Gravley of the USA just touched out Franco Ivo Cassini of Argentina on the final stroke to win the 10 km marathon swim at the Pan American Games in Laguna Los Morros, Chile, 1:50:23.4 to 1:50:23.6. According to World Aquatics regulations, all the athletes wore wetsuits due to the 17°C (62.6°F) water temperature.
Right behind the top two were young 17-year-old Mexican Paulo Delgado Strehlke (1:50:23.8) and Gravley’s younger brother, Dylan (1:50:26.8).
The elder Gravley admitted after, “It was a little violent down the stretch…but I had some fun racing them and they were good sports after.”
Brotherly Love
Overlaying the competition was the overall experience of spending time with his brother Dylan. “Spending time with my brother is really special. Being able to do it with him doing something I love is really, really rare and I don’t think a lot of people will have an opportunity to do something like that, especially with all of the years we’ve done it together; to travel and see the world together, it’s priceless. I love it.”
