When there are swimmer-shark encounters in the ocean, it is always quite worrisome and shocking. But in reality on a global scale, it is sharks that almost always at the losing end of encounters with humans. After dominating their marine environment for over 400 million years, sharks have met their match in the form of contemporary fishermen due to finning and overfishing.

A large part of the fear of sharks can be tied to the popularity of the movie Jaws, a 1975 suspense thriller film directed by Steven Spielberg and based on Peter Benchley’s novel with the same title that was filmed in Martha’s Vineyard and Edgartown, Massachusetts. The film significantly changed humanity’s relationship and fear of Great White sharks and was selected by the Library of Congress in 2001 for preservation in the United States National Film Registry, being deemed culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.
