Huntington Beach in Southern California has 30 lifeguard towers and Tower Zero on its long concrete pier that are staffed with upwards to 68 lifeguards during the summer months. The lifeguards watch over several thousand visitors each day and perform an average of 4,000 rescues each year.
The lifeguards go through rigorous training, testing and evaluation before they become the fortunate few to be equipped and prepared to prevent, patrol and respond to ocean rescues.
