Allan do Carmo Legacy
Denison explains his career, “Allan won 1 Major, the 2014 FINA Marathon Swimming World Cup Series. He competed at the highest level for 16 years, from 2006 to 2022. He won a total of 25 FINA (World Aquatics) medals: 3 gold + 9 silver + 13 bronze, and was ranked in the FINA Top 10 men between 2009 and 2017. In the 81 professional marathon swimming races he competed in 21 countries, he stood on the podium, proudly watching the Brazilian flag be raised 25 times (30%).
Allan raced in the 5 km, 5 km relay, 10 km, and 25 km distances. At the FINA World Championships, he placed 5th in the 25 km in 2013 and 6th in the 25 km in 2011. He also qualified for the 2008 Beijing Olympic marathon swim, finishing 14th, and the 2016 Rio Olympic marathon swim, finishing 16th. His 10 km FINA World Cup victories included the 2014 and 2015 China races, and the 2014 Lac Mégantic race in Canada.
His other international podium finishes included:
- 2009 in France, China, and Bulgaria
- 2010 in Brazil
- 2013 in China
- 2014 in China, Portugal, and Hong Kong
- 2015 in Argentina
- 2017 in Hong Kong
In 2014, he was awarded by FINA as its Best Male Open Water Swimmer of the Year, a year when Brazil swept the awards with Ana Marcela Cunha honored as the Best Female Open Water Swimmer of the Year.
Steven Munatones recalls, “Allan was part of a formidable Brazilian team for many years. He and Olympic teammates Ana Marcela Cunha and Poliana Okimoto, and Samuel de Bona raced everywhere and against everyone, local, nationally, and internationally. It was great to see him and his Brazilian teammates capture a bronze medal in the 5 km Team Pursuit at the 2013 FINA World Championships in Barcelona and a silver in the 5 km Team Pursuit in Kazan, Russia in 2015.
Allan always seemed to have a broad smile on his face; you could see the joy he felt in pursuing a sport he deeply loves. And travel he did – from winning the 1.5 km New World Harbour Race in Hong Kong to racing from Lake Balaton in Hungary to the Seychelles in the South Pacific and winning the 10 km Super Challenge at the Rei e Rainha do Mar and the Aquece Rio [see video above] in Rio de Janeiro.”
