Abigail Fairman set a new course record of 5 hours 30 minutes for the 19.6 km channel crossing from Oxnard on the California mainland to Anacapa Island across the Santa Barbara Channel yesterday.

The previous course record was held by Amy Gubser, 6 hours 2 minutes set last year.

The 41-year-old from Turbotville, Pennsylvania was supported in her record-setting swim by escort kayaker Alex Arévalo, crew chief Matt Schubert, escort pilot Captain Dawn Brooks, and Peter Hayden and Tanya MacLean observing.
