The Pacific Islands Ocean Observing System Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) provides a 7-day, 3-hourly ocean current forecast for the Hawaiian Islands.
Ocean swimmers, kayakers, stand-up paddlers, surfers, divers, windsurfers, and ocean goers of all types can benefit from this data.
Whether you are doing a training swim along the coast or doing an inter-island crossing, the current forecast can be invaluable for planning purposes.
Knowing the current flow, strength, and direction can be key and the difference between an enjoyable swim and a dangerously challenging swim.
For example, 20 knots of wind against a 2-knot current can be a very dangerous combination. Tracy Dixon gave the platform a huge endorsement, “When I was introduced to the PacIOOS products, I immediately recognized them as a great tool for ocean safety planners or any other groups that work in the near shore environment. It goes along with that cliché we always hear from the Honolulu City & County Water Safety, ‘know before you go.‘”
