Cross-border swims are always fun. The logistics of an international swim that starts in one country and finishes in another country, crossing a border somewhere along the course, can be challenging.
Some of the most well-known cross-border swims include:
- Georgeville or Bust, a 24.1 km crossing between Newport, Vermont, U.S.A. and Georgeville, Quebec, Canada
- Embrace The Challenge, a 20 km crossing of Lake Erie between Sturgeon Point, New York, USA and Crystal Beach, Ontario, Canada
- Bente Weber Memorial Swim, a 4 km interisland crossing in the Caribbean Sea (also called the Nevis to St. Kitts Cross-Channel Swim) from Nevis to St. Kitts
- Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swim is an international event in Turkey between Asia and Europe.
- Billy Butlin Cross Channel International Swim was a series of channel swims between England and France held in the 1950’s.
- In Search of Memphre, a 40 km crossing between Newport, Vermont, U.S.A. and Magog, Quebec, Canada
- Beagle Channel, a 3.7 km crossing between the borders of Argentina and Chile
- Pan-American Colibrí Swim, a 7.9 km swim between Imperial Beach in California, USA and Playas de Tijuana in Mexico
- Xiamen-Kinmen Swimming Competition, an 8 km crossing of the Taiwan Strait between China and Taiwan
- LGSA Classic Swim, a 12 km swim across Lac Léman between Lausanne, Switzerland to Évian-les-Bains, France
- Lake Erie Open Water Swimming Association 24.3-mile swim between Long Point, Ontario, Canada to Freeport Beach, North East Twp, Pennsylvania, USA
- Strait of Bonifacio, a 15 km swim between the island of Corsica, France and the island of Sardinia, Italy that divides the Tyrrhenian Sea from the western Mediterranean Sea (Gran Fondo Bocche di Bonifacio).
- Asociación de Cruce a Nado del Río de la Plata swim (Cruce del Plata), a 40 km crossing of the estuary formed by the Uruguay River and the Paraná River between between Colonia, Uruguay and La Plata, Argentina in South America
- Melaka Straits Swim, a 31 km crossing of the Straits of Melaka from Rupat Island, Indonesia to Port Dickson, Malaysia
The Cruce del Plata is not easy. The 40 km crossing has been attempted by approximately 500 people over the past 100 years – but only 36 people have been successful.
Biosfera Films produced a medium-length film that explains this history. Pablo Perez Fiedler and Lucas Rivet explain, “Biosfera Films is an independent film production company based in Buenos Aires. Our production projects include documentary, advertising, and institutional films for various platforms, including movie theaters, streaming websites, and multimedia press releases.
We tell inspiring stories—those that have inspired us and seek to inspire others. We are driven by our wish to establish a deep connection with the story and to understand a particular need for communication. Our motivation and passion help us transform that initial need into powerful audiovisual projects that spark new ideas.“
