Dr. Mariam Saleh Binladen Pioneers An Unprecedented Crossing in Greece

Dr. Mariam Saleh Binladen, a dentist and humanitarian from Saudi Arabia, completed an unprecedented 18.3 crossing from Alimos (Kalamaki) in Athens to Fleves Island in the Saronic Gulf of Greece.

Dr. Marouf reported, “We had an amazing support team with observer Christos Papapostolou, photographer Petros Parthenis, medical support Dr. Stelios, and escort pilot Tassos and International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame Honor Swimmer Attila Mányoki as a support crew and pace swimmer, swimming alongside her for approximately one hour during each two-hour period.

The challenge began in very good conditions, with the waves moving with her. After approximately 3 hours and 45 minutes, we reached more exposed open water where the conditions became much more challenging. The water itself was excellent but strong winds created significant waves cause hard swim conditions.

Dr. Mariam completed her crossing in 5 hours and 16 minutes on a rocky area 200 meters from the sand beach on [the uninhabited] Fleves Island.

Last evening, we held a wonderful ceremony where Dr. Mariam was presented with medals and a trophy by Aqua Sports Club, whose support and assistance played an important role in making this challenge possible.

It was a memorable and successful open water marathon swimming challenge and a very special achievement for everyone involved.
