The 8 Bridges Hudson River Swim is the longest competitive marathon swim in the world that takes swimmers 193 km down the Hudson and into New York Harbor.
Co-organizer David Barra (together with Rondi Davies) explains, “For one week, each day’s marathon swim begins with the ebb tide at one bridge and ends at the next, covering distances ranging from 21.2 km to 31.9 km. Swimmers can participate as solos or relays in one to all of the seven stages.”
Barra, known to say, “Anything worth doing is worth overdoing”, certainly lives up to that motto.
The swim course, held since 2011, requires the 7-stagers to swim under the Rip Van Winkle Bridge, the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge, the Mid-Hudson Bridge, the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge, the Bear Mt Bridge, the New Tappan Zee, the George Washington Bridge, and the Verrazzanno-Narrows Bridge – 8 bridges in total and hence the name of the event
