101 men were entered in the World Aquatics Open Water Swimming World Cup in Ibiza, Spain. 98 men stood on the starting pontoon yesterday.
24 swimmers did not finish. Another 7 swimmers were over the time limit. So over 30% of the field either did not complete the 10 km race or did not finish within the allotted time.
That kind of attrition rate in a World Cup race has never occurred before.
What happened?
Conditions changed. For the worse.
It was choppy – real choppy and cold. At 18.6°C, it was colder than the swimmers expected or prepared for.
It was unexpected and took most of the field by surprise despite national team spots for the upcoming European Championship and Pan Pacific Championship being contested among teammates.
But 2024 Paris bronze medalist David Betlehem (@betlehemdavid, World Aquatics bio here) came out of top, proving his LA28 podium potential in the second World Cup series race of the 2026 season. He said, “I’m very happy with this win. It’s my second individual World Cup victory after Golfo Aranci last year, so to do it again here means a lot. These conditions made drafting less effective. You couldn’t really relax at any point – you had to keep pushing the whole time because of the chop. It became a race of strength and consistency.”
