Life-guardians’ Encyclopedia: 45 Centuries of Drowning Prevention, Rescue, Treatment by Dr. Stathis Avramidis chronicled 45 centuries of lifesaving history and documents humanity’s long and global struggle to protect life in water.

Spanning 4,500 years of history, the Encyclopedia presents the evolution of drowning prevention, rescue, and treatment through the lives and contributions of extraordinary individuals from across civilizations. From ancient Egyptian river rescuers and Greek harbor swimmers to modern pioneers of resuscitation, lifesaving, and water safety education, the book brings together a diverse and interdisciplinary narrative of human effort, innovation, and courage.

Unlike traditional encyclopedias, the Life-guardians’ Encyclopedia goes well beyond historical facts.

The Encyclopedia offers a structured exploration of lifesaving across seven historical periods—from antiquity to the modern global era of drowning prevention. Readers will discover not only technological and medical advancements, but also the stories of physicians, lifeguards, educators, athletes, academics, innovators, media professionals, leaders, administrators, royals, celebrities, entrepreneurs, philanthropists and even animals whose actions have saved lives.

Dr. Avramidis said, “This book is a tribute to humanity’s timeless commitment to protect life in water. It reflects the wisdom, sacrifices, and achievements of individuals who shaped the field of lifesaving across centuries. By learning from them, we can build a safer future.”

The Encyclopedia is designed as both a scholarly reference and an inspirational resource. It includes thematic chapters, biographical profiles, historical timelines, and global perspectives, making it valuable for researchers, educators, lifeguards, policymakers, and anyone interested in water safety. Lifesaving aims to become a sport in the Olympic Games while drowning remains a global public health issue where education, media, and collaboration can ultimately reduce drowning.

Published by the Greek Lifesaving Sports Association and endorsed by the International Swimming Hall of Fame, the International Pierre de Coubertin Committee, the International Lifesaving Federation, the European Lifesaving Federation, and the Mediterranean Lifesaving Federation, author Dr. Avramidis dedicated the book to his two heroes whose work revolutionized safety: the Father of International Lifesaving Federation, Dr Harald Vervaecke PhD, and the creator of Baywatch, Gregory J. Bonann. Dr. Avramidis explained, “I dedicated the book to two titans of global lifesaving and personal heroes of mine. One founded the International Lifesaving Federation, and the other created the television series that contributed more than anything else in the world to reducing drownings.

The ISHOF Chairman Dr Bill Kent, said: “Stathis’ outstanding and pioneering encyclopedia justifies his reputation as an author. This tremendous resource connects harmonically the past, the present and the future.”

The IPCC President Prof. Stephan Wassong, added: “This landmark publication offers an unprecedented historical and scientific overview of lifesaving practices, spanning 45 centuries of knowledge, innovation, and humanitarian effort. We commends its value as a vital reference for professionals, researchers, and institutions worldwide.

Dr. Vervaecke, “This masterpiece is the best Easter gift I have ever received. It wonderfully depicts the global history of rescue through its protagonists.”

Bonann, currently directing episodes of the new Baywatch, after 17 years of acquaintance and collaboration with Dr. Avramidison various projects, said, “Outstanding, comprehensive, and well-documented work.”

The President of the International Pierre de Coubertin Committee, Prof. Stephan Wassong, added: “This landmark publication offers an unprecedented historical and
scientific overview of rescue practices, covering 45 centuries of knowledge, innovation, and humanitarian effort. We commend its value for professionals,
researchers, and institutions worldwide
.”
