Another day, another delay due to poor water quality in Sentosa Island at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships – so the athletes wait and extend their taper.
So the men’s and women’s 10 km races are pushed off until Wednesday – not a good look for the sport of open water swimming on the world’s stage.
Revised Schedule (subject to a review of further tests on July 16th morning)
- July 16th: Men’s 10 km at 13:00 SGT / Women’s 10 km at 16:00 SGT
- July 18th: Men’s and Women’s 5 km
- July 19th: Men’s and Women’s 3 km Knockout Sprint
- July 20th: Mixed 4x1500m Relay
World Aquatics executive director Brent Nowicki explained, “E. coli bacteria levels exceeded acceptable standards. It’s happened in prior World Championships and we built in contingencies for that. In our schedule, there are contingencies that are built in that take into account that something may happen along the way. This is just one of those things that could have happened, that was a risk we had to take.”
Some athletes were informed as late as 11:45 pm the night before the race that their races were to be postponed.
