Matthew Moseley’s Marathon From Moab

Spread the love

Matt Moseley frequently does unprecedented swims to support marine environmentalism (see video below).

Most recently on June 18th, he swam 27.3 km on the Colorado River from the Moab Boat Ramp to Potash Point in 4 hours 30 minutes, another pioneering swim for the author. He explains, “I swam for American Rivers to protect free-flowing rivers throughout the US.  Please consider making a contribution per mile here (US$5 per mile = US$85.) Donations are being matched by the Mighty Arrow Foundation up to a certain limit.

There is something surreal about the juxtaposition of swimming in a cold river through a scorching desert. It was an amazing adventure, but it was the support team that made it greater than the sum of its parts.

A big thanks to my first-rate crew, with Mike Dehoff and Meg Flynn (Returning Rapids) in the lead raft. Observer Michael Fiebig, my long-time paddler Mark Williams and Pedro Ivo from Brazil were in the support kayak next to me. There was a flotilla of other boats and SUPs, including John MansBrian WhitlockEarl RodgersSue RodgersIan O’NeilTomas Defrancia and Tom Winter. It was a special Father’s Day with Kristin Moseley and Amelia Moseley rowing our raft. A big thanks to Phil Lewis for the inspiring artwork.

The Colorado River is arguably the most beautiful — and endangered — river in the United States. As Jim Harrison wrote, “In a life properly lived, you’re a river.”
