Jamal Hill is one of the most interesting, inspirational, and introspective swimmers on the planet.
The 2020 Tokyo Paralympic medalist is making a major difference in his native state of California though his foundation Swim Up Hill. Hill is a non-stop dynamo despite having a degenerative disorder called Charcot-Marie-Tooth.
The mission of Swim Up Hill is to teach 1 million people how to swim via innovative methodologies – that work well. He partners with various organizations, private swim schools, and school districts throughout California to help facilitate more lessons for lower costs to his target audiences.
He explains, “We are helping unhoused children from an inner city school stay in the pool and off of skid row. (literally). Over 50% of the students who we are teaching are unhoused. 80% of skid row inhabitants are born and raised in the neighborhoods surrounding this school.
We need certified lifeguards and volunteer swim instructors for 8 days of lessons across the month of May. The dates include May 10th, 16th, 17th, 23rd, 24th, 30th and 31st from 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm at Ability First Inglewood.”

John Duarte directed and produced an excellent short film about Hill:
