Steven Munatones observed, “With the success of the movie Nyad, based on the outstanding performances of Annette Bening and Jodie Foster along with Rhys Ifans, I have heard of several movies and screenplays in various stages of planning over the last few months. This is great to hear – and is not unexpected. When a new genre captures the public’s attention, more films follow.
Pitching films and TV series about open water swimmers to American film studios and TV broadcast companies was previously a great way to hear a lot of doors close, at least in the US. But now, those doors are opening widely. Producers and executives are listening – and liking – ideas about real swimmers and the sport of open water swimming. It will be great to see the next films and upcoming TV programs about open water swimmers that will hit the screens over the next several years.
Like the exposure that channel swimmers had in the 1950’s and the 1977 documentary film about the mano-a-mano duel between Kevin Murphy and Des Renford or Defeating Oceans Seven featuring Stephen Redmond in 2014, it is wonderful to see swimmers come to life on the big and small screens. There are so many wonderful stories yet to be told.”
