I had the opportunity to observe Pugh during his last part of his 32-day stage swim as he swam past West Point, New York. The serenity of the early morning and the majesty of the West Point campus, along with the unexpected appearance of Black Hawk military helicopters, was grand. Pugh was extraordinarily fatigued at that point, but I could easily see his enjoyment at taking in the surrounding scenery with every stroke. He had an initial grimace as he pulled himself up onto his escort boat, but it was immediately replaced with a broad smile and a deep feeling of gratitude.
His swim, his mission, his work continues to be incredibly meaningful.
