The host country France receives one automatic spot in the Olympic 10K Marathon Swim.
The top thirteen finishers from the Doha 10 km race will secure their spot in Paris.
The highest finishers – other than from France or among the top 13 finishers – from each the five continents (i.e., Europe, Asia, Oceania, Americas, Africa) will also secure their spot in Paris. Only one athlete per continent shall qualify as a Continental Representative.
But the qualification process is not over at that point.
Following the Doha World Aquatics Championships in February, World Aquatics will publish the results and officially inform the respective countries of their qualified athletes. The countries have two weeks to confirm if they wish to enter these athletes.
Some countries (e.g., Israel in the case of Daniel Katzir in 2008) do not accept the Olympic qualification (for various reasons). In those cases, swimmers next on the qualification list are invited.
