Michael Gregory, a nurse, member of the Australian Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame, and a Triple Crowner from Australia, is involved in a research study that is studying the cardiac echo changes in marathon swimmers; particularly SIPE (or swimming induced pulmonary edema). Specifically, the research will investigate the effect of long cold-water swimming on heart function.

He explains, “The study was granted ethics approval by Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute, a large Melbourne public hospital and research facility, and is being conducted as part of my annual 8-hour English Channel qualification swim at Brighton Baths this weekend. We’re running the study in warmer water (18.5°C) than usual as this isn’t a variable or factor included in the research model. I look forward to sharing the results, post scientific publication, and peer review in due course.”
