A Wonderful History Of Swimming

SPLASH! 10,000 Years of Swimming covers the history of swimming from the days of ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome as well as during the Dark Ages and Middle Ages to the Renaissance and modern-day Olympic Games. The new book by well-published journalist and author Howard Means tells many stories of history’s renowned feats of speed or stamina, and how swimming has influenced religion, fashion, architecture, sanitation and public health, colonialism, segregation and integration, sexism over the millennia.

The photos in the book include a promotional photo for the 1927 Wrigley Ocean Marathon [see above] and a Peruvian mailman as described by Alexander von Humboldt early in the 19th century:
