Open Water Swimming’s Trofeo Mykeleya in Sicily

Spread the love

Nino Fazio reported on the 17th Trofeo Mykeleya in Sicily, a historical 1.5K race that traverses the Gulf of Mondello in Palermo.

359 swimmers from ages 8 to 75 participated in the season-ending event promoted by well-known architect Iano Monaco.

The athletes were supported by a favorable wind under good conditions that ended up providing everyone with fast times. 15 year old Gabriele Giacoletti from Nadir Palermo won in 15:47 (results are here).

While the Italian Swimming Federation does not allow swimmers under the age of 12 in its sanctioned races, the Trofeo Mykeleya is open to 9 year old girls and boys ages 10-11. “Trofeo Mykeleya is a very nice place for our kids to start their personal love-story with open-water swimming,” reported Nino.
