Scientists tell us that dolphins make three types of sounds: whistles, clicks and burst pulses. It is understood that whistles are identification sounds, similar to human names. Clicks are used to help navigate and find prey with echolocation. According to leading researchers like Dr. Denise Herzing, the third type of communication, burst pulses, are a combination of whistles and clicks.

While open water swimmers can hear these sounds, dolphins also communicate in ultra-high frequencies which humans cannot hear.
