Prevention Of Shoulder Injuries In Swimming

Spread the love

FINA’s Sports Medicine Committee created a video that addresses the prevention of shoulder injuries in swimming. The video is was a collaborative effort of several of the FINA Sports Medicine Committee members but it was conceptualized by FINA Sports Medicine Committee member Dr. Jim Miller.

The video stemmed from FINA injury research at the 2009 World Swimming Championships in Rome that clearly defined the shoulder as the most common source of injuries in aquatic sports.

Dr. Miller’s approach is unique because he starts with core exercises, then moves to the scapula and concludes with the rotator cuff.

It was done as one video to push this sequence rather than separate videos since everyone goes straight to the rotator cuff and ignores the power source and the link,” explains Dr. Miller, the former team doctor for the USA Swimming national open water swimming team and himself an open water swimmer.

The target audience is athletes, coaches, and team physicians.
