17-year-old Alex McCallum of the Stingray Swim Club in the Cayman Islands swam the race of his life and upset 2-time Olympic champion Ous Mellouli at the Pirates Week 5K Swim on Grand Cayman Island.
World team pursuit champion Ashley Twichell finished third with Lexie Kelly in fourth among the 43-person field. The conditions were described as perfect on the gorgeous Seven Mile Beach over the point-to-point race.
“Ashley set the pace for the first two mile, but when Ous kicked it up a notch I couldn’t hang,” recalled Kelly. “It was a lot of fun. There were some side currents at the beginning, but then around the curve of the second buoy it was in our favor. We checked in at the Westin Hotel and then we were taken by bus to West Bay and swam down past the Ritz-Carlton Hotel. Governor Taylor swam in the race even though he just returned from London the night before.”
