After the most incredible and punishing week in open water swimming history where he stood on the podium in four different events over a 7-day period, double Olympic medalist Thomas Lurz loosened down a bit and caught a trans-Atlantic flight from Barcelona, Spain to Quebec, Canada.
With the typical patience and closing sprint that he is known for, Lurz won the non-linear, point-to-point 10 km Traversée internationale du lac Mégantic in some windy conditions over German teammate Christian Reichert by a scant second.
The next two spots were taken by some fast-rising young ’ems. Third place went to the always-smiling Samuel De Bona of Brazil who was buoyed by a bronze medal performance in the 5 km Team Pursuit at the FINA World Championships while the fourth position was captured by Jarrod Poort, also motivated by his fifth-place performance in the 5 km in Barcelona. “I’m working hard,” said De Bona. “I was training for the 5 km in Barcelona, and to transform that mindset to the 10 km is not easy. But I’m proving that all the hard work is paying good results.”
And few work as hard as the calm, cool, composed German superstar Lurz, “The conditions were very difficult for me today. The waves were strong, especially at the end of the race. My game plan was to win the race on the final sprint.”
